The red mullet, Mullus surmuletus, has always been well represented in the south west of the UK but is becoming more common and has started to appear regularly off our north eastern coasts in the summer months. It has two long barbels under its bottom lip with which it probes soft ground searching for food. It will vigorously dig in the bottom with its head to uncover its prey.
