The conger - Conger conger, is a large and powerful marine eel which can grow to almost 3m in length and a weight 65kg. It is found in all rocky areas off UK coasts where it spends much of its time in holes. It quickly colonises wrecks and man-made objects such as harbour walls. It feeds mainly on crabs, octopus and bottom living fish. Colour is variable between brown and almost black with creamy underparts. The flesh is excellent eating but quite bony and therefore not popular. Itis often confused with the ling which is also eel-like in shape but the ling has a chin barbel whereas the conger does not.
