The largest gurnard around the UK the Tub Gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucernus, grows to a maximum of 75cms although this size is unusual. is found on open ground of sand or sediment which it probes with its sensory feelers to detect hidden invertebrates and fish. Young fish, such as the one pictured, can be seen in quite shallow waters but adults tend to be deeper. Full adults have beautifully marked pectoral fins in blue. Found all round the UK and also called the Sapphirine Gurnard.
