Common Whelk hunting - Buccinum undatum
A large, common and widespread animal on sand and sediment, the Common Whelk, Buccinum undatum, is seen here fully extended as it makes its way across the sand. The trunk like arrangement on the front of the animal is used to "smell" the water. It is capable of detecting dead matter at a surprising distance. See following two pictures for the whelk feeding.
