Common in crevices and under rocks from the lower shore down, the Spiny Squat Lobster, Galathea strigosa is a beautifully marked animal. The carapace is red with brilliant blue random lines. There is a similar blue around the eyes. The claws are long and covered in hairs and sharp, forward facing projections. The nippers themselves are a striking red. Overall length can be 15cms. Seems to prefer areas of high water movement. Moves extremely rapidly when disturbed and is difficult to approach.
