The hydroid, Abietinaria abietina, is common around British coasts in areas of high water movement. It attaches to hard substrate or shells and stones in softer ground. Grows to a maximum of about 10cms in height. The name Sea Fir is sometimes used but this common name is confusing as it is often applied to similar, related hydroids.
