The Painted Goby, Pomatoschistus pictus, very common small fish found inshore in rocky areas all around Britain. It spends all its time on the bottom and grows to about six or seven centimetres. It usually has four distinct dark blotches on its sides and in the breeding season the dorsal fin of the male turns partly blue. It is very tame indeed and will approach divers closely to see whether they are disturbing food from the bottom as they move around
