The Dover Sole, Solea solea, or sometimes just the sole, has a very distinctive, elongated shape and is easy to recognize. The snout is rounded as is the mouth and there are hairy filaments around the head. Colour is variable to match the surroundings although generally it is a light brown as in the illustration. There is usually a black tip to the pectoral fin. It can reach a length of 60cms and fetches a high price in fish markets due to its succulent flesh.
