Minke Whales are the most common baleen whale around the UK and are appearing regularly in areas where they have hardly ever been noted before. If food is about they will come very close to the shore. I have seen them just fifty metres off the harbour at St. Abbs in Berwickshire. Maximum size is about ten metres and ten tonnes in weight.
Sadly, Minke whales are still hunted in significant numbers by Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic.
