A large fish of the cod family, the pollack, Pollachius polachius - or lythe as it is known in Scotland - is a quite common mid-water fish all round the UK. It grows to a maximum of 11kg and is usually seen singly or in small groups. Colour varies from green to a durk gold but small individuals living amongst kelp are often brownish red. The pollack can be confused with the similar coalfish but this is usually more dark green. additionally, the pollack's lower jaw noticeably protrudes beyond the upper.
